Which handpan does Kate Stone play?
Kate Stone plays our Opsilon handpans. She often plays the scales D minor or Pygmy. You can listen to her on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@kate.handpan
The Opsilon Handpan is made in Germany, more precisely in Suessen. The main part of the manufacturing process consists of artisan works carried out by their skilled creator Rafael Sotomayor and his team. Every instrument, i.e. every handpan, is tuned by hand by Rafael. This is a difficult kind of work that takes a lot of time. A smaller part of the manufacturing process consists of various technical forming processes such as deep drawing, hydroforming and spinning. As a German manufacturer of handpans, we are particularly proud to be able to offer a comprehensive warranty. A handpan that does not meet Rafael’s high quality standards will never be sold by us.
The Opsilon Handpan is manufactured in Germany in Süßen, near Stuttgart.
If the scale exceeds 13 notes, we calculate with 200€ for each additional note.
The Opsilon Handpan can be made out of different materials according to your personal preference:
- The classic Opsilon Handpan is made of 1mm thick steel that is nitrided under exact parameters. The instrument is covered by a ceramic layer to protect it from rust and erosion. The favorite if you want to play percussive.
- The “Ember Steel” Opsilon Handpan is made of Ember Steel. The sound is warmer and there is more resonance.
- The stainless steel Opsilon Handpan, which is made of stainless steel. This has even more resonance than the Ember Steel handpan.
Also we have some powder-coated instruments available.
Important Note: Complex instruments are only made out of Ember/Stainless Steel. These instruments will only have these options in the online shop. If you have questions regarding this: [email protected]
The Opsilon has a diameter of 53 cm and a depth of about 25-30 cm. The standard thickness of the handpan is 1 mm.
During the nitriding of the instrument, there may be some marks on the instrument that do not affect the quality. However, removing these marks can damage the instrument, as polishing also removes the nitriding and if we would remove the nitriding, we would remove our protection against rust.
The marks on the Ember Steel handpans is a natural process, which can happen or not. It is hard to predict, if such a patina will appear or not.
Any attempted “repair” on your own will void the warranty.
Our instrument is always evolving. We spend a lot of time and money researching new materials and optimising production processes to make more stable instruments that stay in tune longer. Furthermore, one should keep in mind that the instrument is hand-hammered and tuned by a single person. Making a high quality instrument like the Opsilon is a creative and very time-consuming process. We thank all our customers for their patience.
Currently we have a long waiting list, so keep an eye on immediate purchases.
Due to a high demand, we have to adjust our delivery times.
9 – 13 note instruments: 8 to 12 weeks.
14 to 19 note instruments: approx. 16 weeks.
20 note instruments: 20 weeks.
The F# nordlys takes 6 months due to its complexity.
Lowest note: F#2
Highest note: F6
Choose a standard scale or create your own. For examples of scales for the Opsilon, check out our video scales directly on our website, or visit our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5O3cVKau3UyPT4ZuyRsGBA.
Because we have great confidence in our instruments, we give you a five-year guarantee (starting October 1st, 2019) on all our instruments. Prior to this date, the warranty was limited to three years. This includes a five-year tuning guarantee. This voting guarantee is limited to once a year. As already mentioned, careful handling of your Opsilon is obligatory. Rust is not covered by the guarantee as it can easily be prevented by taking good care of the instrument and especially by following our care recommendations.
Retuning your Opsilon
The instrument can stay in tune for years if played and cared for “correctly”, as the material is very robust. However, it can happen that the instrument gradually becomes out of tune over time. With us you have the possibility to have the instrument tuned free of charge, as long as you have a valid guarantee. Please be careful, when buying a second-hand product, always ask for the guarantee slip.
We hope that you will take care of your Opsilon Handpan, but we also know that something can always happen. If your Opsilon is damaged, a repair is possible, depending on the degree of damage. The tuning of the instrument is possible at any time and is offered by us free of charge, as long as the guarantee is still valid. The repair costs for severely damaged instruments must be discussed individually.
Optionally, you can order a TurtleCase (hard case) for your Opsilon at an additional price of 230,00 €. We offer a variety of different colours. If you choose the shipping option, please note that the hardcase will automatically be added to your order – this is the only way we can guarantee safe shipping of your Handpan.
So far, thanks to the hardcase, we have not had any problems with the safe delivery of our instruments. Please notify us if your instrument arrives damaged so we can begin the claims process.
All products on the Opsilon store are shipped either with DHL or UPS – fast and carbon neutral.
If you buy a handpan on the second-hand market, there is always a risk. You can minimize this by having pictures sent to you. If the instrument has rusty spots, the instrument has not been optimally cared for and caution should be exercised.
The handpan is a unique musical instrument that needs special attention in terms of care and protection. Here are some valuable tips and recommendations to extend the life of your handpan and ensure it performs at its best.
Additional Tips
Travel: When traveling with your instrument, be careful not to leave it in your case all the time, especially in humid climates. Care should be taken to ensure air circulation and to check whether the case has become damp on the inside.
Summary
We do not recommend treating the handpan with oil, but using a care product that does not penetrate the material but remains on the surface. Over the long term, oil will cause the instrument’s sound to change, especially in instruments with a lot of overtones. We recommend treating the instrument with the ceramic coating “TurtleCare”.
If you have booked a workshop and are unable to attend one of our workshops, please let us know at least 5 days in advance. As the number of places is limited, it would be a shame if the place remained unused. If a registered participant does not attend the workshop without cancelling in advance and the place therefore remains unused, we will unfortunately have to charge the complete workshop fee.
If you cannot attend, there is the option to change to another of the workshop dates. if the date is not fully booked.
In any case, please write an e-mail to [email protected] if you cannot attend to the workshop.
